Former Cortland Man Dies in Rome, Prayer Here Tomorrow
Leland E. Bates, Sr., 46, formerly of Cortland, died Sunday morning at the Rome Hospital after a prolonged illness caused by heart disease.
Mr. Bates was born in Brooklyn in 1887, the son of Charles W. Bates and the late Carrie Wright Bates. He resided there until he was married to Irene Dunn in Cortland 25 years ago and made Cortland, Syracuse, Rome and Utica his homes during this later life.
He operated dry cleaning establishments throughout the state and at the time of his death had an establishment in Utica. He was a member of the First M.E. Church of Cortland.
Besides his wife and father, he leaves six sons, Leland, jr., of Rome and Donald, Robert, Richard, Stanley and Douglass of Utica; three daughters, the Misses Geraldine, Betty and Jane of Utica; one sister, Miss Marie Bates of Syracuse and a brother, Frank E. Bates of Syracuse.
The funeral will beheld at Rome tomorrow with prayer at 1:30 at the chapel at Cortland Rural Cemetery, interment to follow.
