Palo Verde Valley Times:

J O Mc Auley passed away March 2, 2009 at his home in Indio after a brief illness. J O was born November 2, 1930 in Saltillo, Texas. He moved to Blythe when he was eight years old, right after the "big flood." He attended Blythe schools and graduated in 1949 from what was then known at Palo Verde Union High School. As a young man he managed the Hub and Rio theaters, as well as the Blythe Drive In and Bowling Alley.

He married Betty Graser in the summer of 1951 and together they had two children.

He served as a police officer for two years. On New Years Day 1963 he opened the Dairy Queen fulfilling his dream of owning a fast food restaurant with an air conditioned dining room. It was the first fast food restaurant to have a dining room. Since that time, Dairy Queens, as well as other fast food chains, have been built to replicate this model. He later purchased Carl's Burgers.

After leaving Blythe in 1978, J O managed Stuckey Stores in California and Louisiana, along with his wife Bobbi. He then returned home to Indio in 1983 where he had a pool cleaning business which he ran with his wife Annie.

J O is survived by his wife Annie of Indio; his children: Betty Jo (Allen) McVey, John (Debra) McAuley, sister: Betty Jean Manley; grandchildren, Sean (Liz) McVey; Rian (Tim) Collins-Trank; Matthew and Ian McAuley, great-granddaughters: Ayden and Brennen Collins; nephews and niece: Joe (Rosie) Manley, Gene (Chris) Manley and Kathleen Nystrom; stepchildren Laura Burke, Karen Fortner, Mona Rhoades; James Burke and Jason Burke.

He was preceded in death by his former wife Betty McAuley and his parents John and Margaret.

J O was a kind man who loved to joke. In remembrance, a random act of kindness would be the most valued tribute.
