In 1830 Caleb Gabriel "Jasper" Capers was living in Alabama with his parents. His father Colonel William Hickson Capers was the son of George Sinclaire Capers and his wife Mary. His father was married to Elizabeth Lenore(Lenoir) the second of July 1805 by the Reverend John Cowper. In 1800 he moved to Sumter County South Carolina where in 1820 he was Sheriff of that County. In 1825 he moved to Tuscaloosa County Alabama. By 1835 the family had moved to Kemper County Mississippi where his father first appeared on the state census. In 1839 Caleb appeared on the state census.
When Caleb's brother William's will was proved in September 1838 Caleb was listed as living in Tuscaloosa Alabama along with his brothers Leonidas Ransom and Richard Legrand Capers. By 1843 he was living in Louisiana and married Ruth Beasley, born in 1827 in Louisiana to Joseph Beasley and Hester/Easter Whitney Beasley. In 1850 Caleb and Ruth were in Carroll Parish Louisiana where he was working as a planter. Sometime between the birth of their son John in 1858 and their daughter Louisa in 1863, they moved to Columbus in Colorado County Texas. (Many families in Louisiana moved west to Texas to get further away from the Civil War. ) Ruth died in 1868 giving birth to their eleventh child Susan.
When a ferry was built in 1845, Columbus became a shipping point for cotton and other farm products and a stopping place for wagon trains going west. The first Texas railroad terminated at Alleyton in 1860. A bridge spanned the river in 1866 and the community continued as a shipping point.
By 1870 the family had moved to Corsicana and Ruth had died. Her mother is no longer living with the family and may have died also or gone to live with another child. Caleb was living with his daughter Elizabeth whose husband had passed away in 1869. Perhaps, that is why he moved to Corsicana. In 1874 he married Malinda Rhodes and had six more children. He died in 1884 and his young wife died in 1892 leaving the six children orphaned, all under age 19. Some children were placed at the Buckner's Children Home. Mattie Rose who was born in 1879 and only 13 when her mother died, eventually had an attorney firm prepare a family history listing all the descendants and parentage of Caleb Capers. She must have provided a copy to her half sister Louisa Alice Capers Clark for it to have come into the possession of Louisa's daughter Mayme and then Louisa's great granddaughter and family researcher Vinita Lynch Shaw.
