From Quaker Hill, Waterford, Connecticut, Pete was the Class President of the 1959 Class of New London High School where he lettered in Football and Baseball. Accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. At West Point, in his first year, he was selected to command Company E-1. He graduated in 1963 and attended Ranger and Airborne courses then joined the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. When the Army expanded Special Forces, Pete was selected to help make that change. He served in Panama with the 8th Special Forces Group. In 1967 He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Divison in Vietnam. He was in command of two companies and highly decorated. He was assigned to the Naval Postgraduate School in California and soon to his second tour in Vietnam. While serving with the 3rd Regional Command (TRAC) as Corps Level G3 and involved in an inspection visit with General Tallman at An Loc in Binh Long Province, Major Bentson was killed by in a rocket attack on the base. General Tallman was also killed, the date was July 9, 1972.
Some of the decorations received were; The Silver Star, The Legion of Merit, The Soldier's Medal, The DFC, Bronze Star with two "V" for valor devices, The Army Commendation Medal with "V" for valor, the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters plus the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the Vietnam Campaign medal, the Vietnam Merit medal and the Vietnam National Order, 5th class.
Pete was survived by his wife Peg and Children, Kristine, Eric and Jodie.
