U.S. Congressman. He moved to Illinois, in the mid 1800s and engaged in mercantile pursuits, (1876-80). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1883 and began to practice law at Robinson, Illinois. There he served as president of the Robinson City School Board, (1884-88) and as master in chancery, (1886-90). He was elected Judge of Crawford County, serving (1886-90) and was appointed United States special Treasury agent in charge of the seal fisheries of Alaska, serving (1893-98). In 1898, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth, Fifty-seventh and Fifty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1905. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and served as Illinois State Attorney of Crawford County, (1912-16). (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
