The son of Johannes & Anne Elisabetha (Dickel) Gelbach, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his parents in Wheatfield Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Loysville, Perry County, August 8, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13 as a private with Co. H, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Left behind sick in a hospital near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on October 30, 1862, he was transferred the following day to the medical facility at Frederick, Maryland. He returned to duty in early 1863 and honorably discharged with his company May 25, 1863. He is on the roster as "Gelbaugh" and in the Pennsylvania Archives ARIAS file as "Gilbaugh."
He married Louisa Bowser and fathered William Henry (b. 10/09/66) and Sarah J. V. (b. 1868). In 1890, he was living in Penn Township, Perry County.
