Charley Earl Elam, 96, of Taylorville, died Friday, November 18, 2011, at 3:25 p.m, at Taylorville Care Center.
He was born on September 6, 1915, in Maroa, Il, the son of William Madison and Stella Elizabeth (Faulker) Elam, stepmother, Cicil Terry Elam. He married Opal Irene Steck on December 24, 1937, at the First Baptist Church in Taylorville. She died July 22, 2008. He was a proud farmer and worked at Massey Ferguson. He was a deacon, greeter and served on various committees at First Baptist Church in Taylorville and a member of the Christian County Farm Bureau and Willey's Co-op.
Surviving are his daughters, Kathy J. Smith of Taylorville and Wanda Askelson (Dennis) Sabin of DeKalb, IL; son-in-law, Everett Hedricks, of Taylorville; grandchildren, Sharon (Denny) Taft of Taylorville, Tina (Lee) Pownall, of Taylorville, Heather (Steve) Ruments of Purcellville, VA, Kirsten Askelson of Fox Lake, IL, and Amber (Jason) Rossler of Huntley, IL; great-grandchildren, Scott (Elizabeth) Brockelsby of Taylorville, Sandy (Brandon) Neal of Frankfort, IN, Erin Taft of Springfield, Regan (Daniella) Taft of Forida, Bob (Amanda) Hancock, of Taylorville, Jeff (Bailey) Hancock of Taylorville, Chad Hancock of Taylorville and Hunter Rosser of Huntley, IL; great-great grandchildren, Reese, Ryan and Rhyten Brockelsby and Laila Hancock all of Taylorville; brother, Chester (Georgia) Elam of Taylorville; step sisters, Bonnie Whyte of CA, June Peters of CA, and Elaine Van Horn of Sullivan, IL; step brother, John (Nita) Terry of Mulberry Grove, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, daughter, Marilyn Hendricks; sisters Eunice Neilson and Pearl Cook, and brother Lester Elam.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 23, 2011at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Taylorville, with Rev. Steve Robinson officiating and visitation preceding from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday.
