During the Civil War, he enlisted in the US Navy as a messenger boy for a year, then enlisted as a private in Company F of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry and would be wounded on three separate occasions. After the war, he went to California and was appointed the Sheriff of San Mateo County from 1897 to 1906, after the death of Sheriff William McEvoy, and from 1910 to 1914.
