Lena Bertha Etheridge Oakes was born on July 3, 1918 in Madison County near Willowole. Her parents were William & Lucy (Carroll) Bryant. She grew up in North Zulch and attended North Zulch High School. Lena and her husband, E.B. Etheridge moved to Freeport and later moved to Houston where E.B. went to work for Dow Chemical Company. E.B. passed away on April 30, 1950 at the age of 36.

Lena was a homemaker and liked to cook. She loved all of her grandchildren. Lena died on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 in Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Helen and 10 siblings. She is survived by her son, James E. Etheridge and his wife, Ellean of Houston, Texas; brother, Johnny Bryant of Edna, Texas; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.
