Nils was the son of Anne Eriksdatter (Svartas) and Nils Tollefsen Dyrhovd who was born on the family farm in Rishovd, Krødsherad, Buskerud, Norway. According to the 1910 U.S. Census, he moved to the United States from Norway in about 1882. In 1886, he married Berte Johanne Ellefsdatter. Their children were Paul Alfred, Jule Norman, Martin Sigvold, and Casper Edwin.
