He was born in Springwells, MI, present day Dearborn, MI in 1913.His father Joseph Karman was the Mayor of Springwells, and a close friend of Henry Ford I. Mr. Karman remembers visiting Fair Lane, Henry Ford's home in Dearborn quite a few times as a child. Ironically his Grandparents farm was at the bend of the Rouge River, and his grandparents sold their home to Ford Motor Company, so Ford could build the Rouge Plant. One story Norbert related also, his father Joseph Karman was friends with the Real Estate Tycoon Robert Oakman. Which by the way, has a street named after him. Norbert stated " When my father and I went on Mr. Oakman's sail boat, he gave me a little Sailors Suit to wear". In the 1930's he worked for the Ford Farms, on Mr. and Mrs. Ford's Fair Lane property. He was involved in conservation of forests, Dearborn Historical Society, and one of the founders and first president of the Fordson High School Alumni Association. Mr. Karman graduated from Fordson High in 1931. His wife, children, Grandchildren, miss him very much, and I sure miss his knowledge along with his friendship.
