John Sterling Edward Abbe was born 10 April 1811 in Denmark, Lewis, New York, the son of Simon Abbe and Peninah Goodell. He had a twin sister Jane Ann Eveline Abbe. Family tradition says that John stowed away on a boat coming down river and he landed in New Orleans. He made his way into Alabama and there he met and married his wife Frances Stringer on 3 July 1838 in Monroe County, Alabama. She was the daughter of Emery Stringer and Mary "Polly" Horn. They remained in Monroe County Alabama until after the 1850 Census. They are found in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana where he owned property in 1862. Records revealed that his property was sold on the Court House steps because of back taxes. His date of death is therefore after 1862 in Caldwell Parish. His survivors are his wife; Frances Stringer of the home, five sons; William Alonzo Abbe, John Coleman Abbe, David Greenberry Abbe, Simon Goodall Abbe and Levi Aaron Abbe, two daughters; Mary Melissa Abbe and Nancy M. Abbe. His place of burial in Caldwell Parish is unknown by the family.
