BETTENDORF - Polly A. Hippler 73, died Saturday, August 9, at Trinity at Terrace Park Medical Center, Bettendorf, after a brief illness.
Polly was born in Moline, Illinois, June 12, 1935. She is the daughter of Richard Herman and Elsie Haak Nelson. She graduated from St. Katherine School, Davenport, attended Lawrence College, Appleton, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Michigan. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. Polly was united in marriage to Eugene Hippler on June 6, 1959. Their daughters are Gretchen Mills, Moline, and Susan Hippler, Houston, Texas. Both graduated from Bettendorf High School and Polly was very proud of their academic and athletic accomplishments. Gretchen graduated from the University of Illinois. She married David Mills and they are the parents of Polly's grandchildren. They are Peter, a student at Seton School, Andrea, a junior at Alleman High School and Stephanie, a sophomore at Vanderbilt University. Polly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and they delighted in her company. Susan Hippler graduated from Augustana College with a degree in Geology. She received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Leeds University, Leeds, England. She is a geologist for ExxonMobil in Houston. Polly was quite proud of her daughters, her grandchildren and her son-in-law, David. Polly was a member of the Senior Board of the Quad-City Symphony Orchestra for more than 20 years. She served as president of the board for two years. She also served on the Board of Family and Marriage Counseling. She was a member of the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club, Tuesday Club and Antique Study Club. She enjoyed golfing, gardening and reading. She was especially happy working part- time creating floral arrangements with her friends at Staacks Florist in Moline. In addition to her husband Eug, her daughters and grandchildren, Polly is survived by a sister, Gay Fahrner, of California, and her nieces and nephews. Polly's family extends their gratitude to Dr. Costas Constantinou for his professional care and personal concern during her illness. The family is also grateful for the exceptional care and kindness provided by the Intensive Care nurses at Trinity at Terrace Park Medical Center. Polly requested there be no formal service or visitation. A private family service will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family. A luncheon to honor Polly will be held in the near future. Suggested memorials are the Sisters of St. Benedict, St. Mary's Monastery, c/o Sister Janet Cassidy, 2200 88th Avenue West, Rock Island, IL 61201 or Wings of Mercy, an organization of private pilots that provide emergency flights for persons with limited resources at no cost, 10720 Adams St., Holland, MI 49423, or to a charity of your choice.
