Alexander helped run the family grist mill and gin, oversaw the slaves and ran the addlery. Before his marriage, he built his home from cedar logs from the Green Mountains. During the Civil War, Alexander made saddles for the Union Army. Less than a month after his first wife, Hester Elizabeth Moon, died of pneumonia, Alexander married Angeline Cobb.
