Devilia Bolton married Charity Sleight in Griffin's Corner (now called Fleischmanns) Delaware Co, New York, on 12 Jan 1834. Town records of Walton, Delaware Co, New York, show on 27 Aug 1848, Mary Louisa Bolton was born to Davilia (sic) and Charity Bolton. They moved west shortly after, since the 1850 census places them in Florence Township, Stephenson Co, Illinois.

His parentage is elusive and his father's surname may have been Boulton, Bouton or Bonton. In the 1840 census for Roxbury, Delaware Co NY, it has 'Devilia Boulton' living with wife and offspring - Fenno and Loretta (Mary not yet born); where their household is listed directly adjacent to the households of William S(mith) Scudder (the younger) and Joseph E(mbree) Scudder. The 1900 census (Bolton/Florence) for son Fenno, has a John Scudder living with them as a farmhand, born Dec 1880, in Illinois.

In 1840, there are two females in Devilia's household, age 20 - 29, the second female presumed to be Charity's sister - Loretta Rose (Sleight) Byse, who also moved to Stephenson Co, Illinois, with the Boltons in 1849, and likely whom the Boltons named their second child after. Charity's sibling - Daniel Samuel Sleight, moved to Florence Township, Stephenson Co, about when Devilia and Charity migrated. Daniel's claim was made through the same Dixon office as Devilia's and his land was situated next to the Bolton's land in Florence Township. Daniel and his wife Rachel Garrison, died in 1851/53. One of their children was named Devilia Sleight, after his uncle - this Devilia the Elder, who was also appointed the Younger's guardian after his mother's death. The I.R.A.D. Land Database shows Charity's other brother - Stephen Lawrence Sleight, also held land close to the Bolton homestead, and whom later moved to Iowa.

The 1850 census has Devilia born in New York, while the 1860 census says he was born in Massachusetts, the later being the most likely.

20 Jan 1851: a land warrant was issued from the Mexican-American War; deceased veteran, Private Lemuel/Samuel G. Burton, of Captain Thomas M. Horine Company F of the Second Regiment of the Missouri Mounted Volunteers, was assigned through "Lemuel's mother and "heir at-law, Nancy Burton", and was subsequently sold and/or transferred to Devilia Bolton, where he then exchanged this warrant for land at the land office in Dixon, Illinois. Lemuel G. Burton, aka Samuel, died at Santa Fe, New Mexico, on 12 Feb. 1847 during the Mexican-American War. There seems to be a discrepancy though, between the I.R.A.D. database date and the land warrant issue date, of approximately 6 months.

Besides the Scudder family, Devilia may have had ancestral ties before 1850, in New York or Massachusetts, to the Scovill, Snyder, Peck or Houck families, that also moved from Greene / Delaware Co, New York, to NW Illinois, about the same time as Devilia.

In 1860, a "Devillo S. Bolton" is known born Oct 1853, in Allegheny Co., NY, who resided in the John Snyder household. The wife of Devilia's son Fenno, was Rhoda Jane Scovill, whose mother was Sally Catherine Snyder, before she married Shelden Scovill.

The Houck family of Delaware Co, NY, had a marriage between a Bolton and a Houck. Two males in the family there were: Devillo Houck (1913-1995) & John Devillo Houck (1883-1966) - the father of the previous. The Illinois 1865 agricultural census shows "Debilia Bolton" and his wife and daughter living (likely temporarily) in Forreston, Ogle Co, Illinois, next to the "John Hyuck" residence. The value of the household livestock was $125 and the value of other was $10. At this time, son Fenno and his family were living on the homestead in Bolton/Florence Twp, Stephenson Co.

After Devilia Bolton's death in 1868, Charity is listed in the 1870 census, in the house of Devilia's son-in-law and his daughter - William & Loretta Amanda (Bolton) Van Brocklin, in Bolton, Florence Twp., Illinois.
