He was born in December 1847 as Rinze Tilstra in the small country village Schingen (in Frisian language: Skingen), municipality Menaldumadeel, in the northwestern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, son of the 27 years aged skipper Dirk Martens Tilstra and Antje Tabes Winselaar.
Rinze Tilstra, residing at his birthplace Schingen and without occupation, was on 18 March 1867 declared unfit for military duty, in those years for a period of five years, because of his lack of length: he was was 1 m 452 mm tall, later on corrected to 1 m 468 mm. He had an oval face, a low stern, an ordinary nose and mouth, a round chin, blond hair and eyebrows.
Rinze Dirks Tilstra married on 23 January 1873 in Menaldum, seat of municipality Menaldumadeel at the age of 25 years to the four years younger Baukje Jeltes Stellingwerf, born in Tzummarum, mun. Barradeel, daughter of Jelte Sybes Stellingwerf and Grietje Douwes Douma.
Rinze and Baukje had in Schingen (Skingen) in the municipality, province Friesland, the following children:
* Dirk, 3 January 1874;
* Grietje, 16 May 1875;
* Jelte, 22 September 1876
* Klaas, 28 December 1877;
* Sybe, 5 January 1879;
* Antje, 13 March 1880;
* Douwe, 26 December 1881;
* Jeltje, 31 May 1883;
* Jantje, 11 September 1884.
Rinze was in 1874 and 1884 a baker, residing -still- in his birth village Schingen.
The family Tilstra emigrated in 1887 to the USA.
His sons Dirk (Dick) and Douwe (David) died in 1904 and 1912 at the age of about 29 and 30 years, both very probably in or near the Dutch truck farmers settlement South Holland, just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
In 1910 Renza Tilstra (62 y, born in the Netherlands), his wife Bessie (58, Netherlands), their children Nicholas (32, Netherlands), Samuel (31, Netherlands), David (28, Netherlands), Annie (30, Netherlands), Ella (26, Netherlands) and Jennie (25, Netherland) lived in Thornton [Township, very likely in or near South Holland too, Cook County, Illinois. According to the records of this Census 1910 the family Tilstra immigrated in 1887.
R. Tilstra was one of the early gardeners of South Holland. Many of these gardeners made an all day trip to the South Water Street market in Chicago to sell their crops. There exists a very nice photo of Mr. R. Tilstra sitting on his fully by vegetables loaded, by a horse drawn wagon.
Farmer Renze Tilstra died in March 1916 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 68 years. His widow Bouke Tilstra died in May 1928 at the age of 76 years in South Holland too.
Because Rense's only grandson Robert J. Tilstra (1925-2001) had no children, this Tilstra line died out (in male, surname line).
