Obit of John Sharbine from The Pantagraph; Bloomington, Illinois

"John Sharbine [born Sherbine] died at 6:15 a.m. today at his home in South McKinney after a four-month illness. The deceased was born in Pennsylvania, July, 2, 1828. In 1859 he moved to Illinois where he resided till the spring of 1876 when he moved to Texas, settling in Collin county. He has made his home in and near McKinney ever since coming to the state 28 years ago. He served in the Union army from Illinois. His aged wife and nine children survive. Five married daughters live in Illinois and all came to visit him last Christmas. His other daughters are Mrs. Harry Carter of Durant and Miss Emma Sharbine of Dallas, and sons are D. F. and John A. Sharbine, both of McKinney. The funeral services will take place at his late residence tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock, to be conducted by Rev. G.L. Bush and burial at the Williams graveyard, 4 miles west of McKinney, at 3 o'clock. The deceased took great pride in the progress of his country and in its military affairs, it being his desire that he be given a military burial if possible. Mr. Sharbine was a kind-hearted father and husband, and an honest man and neighbor. His death is a sad blow to his aged widow. We deeply sympathize with the bereaved family in their dark hour."

Sep 16-24: Marched to Springfield, Missouri, stayed to Oct 11.

★ 1863 Apr 15: John Sharbine was discharged due to disability. After his discharge John's unit was at the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, then afterwards pushed through Texas, to the Rio Grande River, then were discharged in Galveston, in 1865. John's fellow soldiers from McLean County, would have told him about Texas and this likely came to be at least a partial impetus for John to move his wife and unmarried children there, in 1876.

★ 1880 Census of McKinney, Collin Co TX has the John Sharbine household next to E. Harris, E.D. McCoy, Grafton Williams - where John and Sophia were buried, in the Williams Cemetery, McKinney TX. The Harris, McCoy and Williams farm plats are located aprox. 3 to 4 miles southwest of McKinney TX, in the 1881 plat map of Collins County.

McKinney, disease lungs & rheum, $8.00 monthly, Original Date - May 1871.

★ 1900 Census, McKinney, Collin Co TX, has "Benjamin Sharbine" listed in John's and Sophia's household, who is David Frank Sharbine. Benjamin is either a census taker error or was a nickname, further verified by the fact there was no other listing in the 1900 census anywhere, for David Frank Sharbine. This census has John's father born in England and his mother born in France, but the 1880 census has both his parents born in Pennsylvania, the most likely place.

JOHN's GENEALOGY

John's parents are traditionally known as Samuel Sherbine and Mary Johns, whom without a written record, most likely married in the early 1820s. From census records, they were both likely born 1790-99 and are unfound in the 1850 census, likely dying before June 1849, since they're not on the 1850 Mortality Schedule. Samuel was likely older, born in the early to mid 1790s. Mary was likely younger than Samuel, born in the mid to late 1790s., considering their youngest child was Rachel (bca 1837).

Considering the 1820 census of Milford Twp., Somerset Co., Samuel Sherbine was not yet in his own household, but was the right age to be the 2nd male age 26 - 44 (b. 1776 - 1794) in the household of Phillip Sherbine. Elder more established members in German families of the Pennsylvania Dutch were known to share their homes and responsibilities with younger, less established siblings and/or children/grandchildren, until the younger family members own homesteads were raised and cleared of timber for cultivation.

Considering the 1830 and 1840 censuses of Jenner Twp., Somerset Co., Samuel Sherbine is the head of his own household and John had at least two brothers and five or six sisters.

★ 1830 Census (June 1) - SAMUEL SHERBINE hh inhabitants presumed to be:

... 1 male 20 - 29y / Samuel s/b in 30-39yo bracket, b. 1790-1799, like 1840 census below.

... 1 male 5 - 9y, b. 1821 - 1825 / Levi (b. 1825)

... 1 male 0 - 4y, b. 1826 - 1830 / John (b. 1828)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

... 1 female 30 - 39y, b. 1791 - 1800 / Mary

... 2 female 0 - 4y, b. 1826 - 1830 / Susannah (b.1827), Unknown Female

★ 1840 Census (June 1) - SAMUEL SHERBINE hh inhabitants presumed to be:

... 1 m 40 - 49y, b. 1791 - 1800 / Samuel

... 1 m 15 - 19y, b. 1821 - 1825 / Levi (b.1825)

... 1 m 10 - 14 y, b. 1826 - 1830 / John (b. 1828)

... 1 m 5 - 9y, b. 1831 - 1835 / Samuel L. ?

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

... 1 f 30 - 39y, b. 1801 - 1810 / Mary

... 1 f 10 - 14y, b. 1826 - 1830 / Susannah (b. 1827)

... 2 f 5 - 9y, b. 1831 - 1835 / Nancy (b. 1830), Elizabeth (b. 1831)

... 2 f 0 - 4y, b. 1836 - 1840 / Lydia (b. 1836), Rachel (b. 1837)

Samuel and Mary (Johns) Sherbine have both likely died before June 1849, since neither is found on the 1850 Census/Mortality Schedule.

★ 1850 Census (June 1) - Stoneycreek Twp, Somerset Co PA;

JOHN SHERBINE, age 22, laborer, living/working in JACOB & CATHARINE FRITZ household, without his newlywed wife - Sophia Lape, who according to the census, was still living with her parents a short distance from John in Brothers Valley. After parents Samuel and Mary died, their daughters Elizabeth, Lydia and Nancy are found living with other families in the 1850 census cited below, with the whereabouts of Rachel and Levi unknown.

The proven, probable and possible siblings of this memorial's John Sharbine are listed below. (*) indicates tested descendants of John Sharbine's siblings, share identical segments of dna with tested descendants of John Sharbine.

1) Levi Sherbine (1825-1853) was the right age to be John's sibling. Levi Sherbine, Susannah Sherbine and Rachel Sherbine, all lived, died and are interred in Jenner Twp., where John Sharbine had lived. Levi Sherbine's grave is in row 4 from the highway, next to the grave of Eve (Gonder/Gunder) DANIELS, whose tombstone inscription reads "Consort [1st] of Joseph W." [DANIELS], who had the same surname as Jonathan 'Jackson' Daniels, whose 1st wife was Susannah Sherbine and whose 3rd wife was Susannah Sherbine's sister - Rachel Sherbine. Joseph W. Daniels married a 2nd time to Mary Elizabeth (Lape) Baldwin (1827-1906), who had the same maiden name as John Sharbine's wife - Sophia (Lape) Sharbine. Too circumstantially coincidental to ignore, Levi Sherbine was likely an older brother of John Sharbine.

Possible brother Samuel L. Sherbine: bca 1827-32, d. 19 Mar 1894,

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following census enumerations for the Phillip Sherbine household, indicates he and his wife Catherine were born no earlier than 1785, so Phillip Sherbine is highly likely NOT the father of Samuel Sherbine, since Samuel was most likely born no later than 1799.

Dna analysis from descendants of 5 of the 10 children of Phillip Sherbine, confirms they share segments of identical dna with descendants of John Sharbine, so it's highly likely Samuel Sharbine and Phillip Sherbine were brothers. John's father - Samuel Sherbine, was probably no more than five years younger than his brother Phillip Sherbine, so with this small age difference taken into account, Samuel could NOT be Phillip's son, further verified by Cyclopedia of Cambria County listing the known children of Phillip Sherbine, showing Samuel was not a son of Phillip. The aforementioned source indicates Phillip Sherbine was the son of "Daniel Sherbine the immigrant - a Lutheran from Germany", who would be John Sharbine's paternal grandfather as well.

Listed below are the 10 children of Phillip Sherbine and Catherine Rummel, whose

+++ 5 stayed in Pennsylvania / 2 went to Ohio / 2 went to Illinois / 1 went to Iowa

Further solidifying the circumstantial and dna evidence that John Sharbine was related to the Phillip Sherbine family children in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, is the fact that Phillip's youngest son David Frank Sherbine who moved to McDonough, Illinois, also shares the same name as this John Sharbine's son David Frank Sharbine. Too coincidental to ignore.

In 1859 he moved to Illinois where he resided till the spring of 1876 when he moved to Texas, settling in Collin county. The deceased took great pride in the progress of his country and in its military affairs, it being his desire that he be given a military burial if possible. Mr. Sharbine was a kind-hearted father and husband, and an honest man and neighbor. His death is a sad blow to his aged widow. We deeply sympathize with the bereaved family in their dark hour."

as Private in 94th Regiment Illinois Infantry, Company I.

John seems to have adopted the "Sharbine" spelling when he enlisted.

Sep 10: To Rolla Missouri, Ft Wyman where the railroad western terminus was.

Sep 16-24: Marched to Springfield, Missouri, stayed to Oct 11.

Oct 11-14: Attached to 2nd Brigade - 3rd Div Army of Frontier, marched to Cassville, MO.

Oct 17-24.Expedition to Cross Hollows, Ark., over Boston Mountains.

Nov 4-22: March to Wilson's Creek (Union was defeated there earlier in Aug 1861).

Dec 3-6: Forced march to relief of General Blunt.

Dec 7: Battle of Prairie Grove, Ark., there till Dec 27.

Dec 27-31: Expedition over Boston Mountains to Van Buren, White River, then marched through Missouri to near Rolla and duty there till June, 1863.

"John Sharbine has bid farewell to Cropsey. He has started for McKinney, Texas."

Children who went with to Texas were: Emma, Matilda, David, John & Minnie.

★ 1883 Civil War Pensioners Roll, Collin Co TX. Cert. 110377, John Sharbine,

★ 1840 Census (June 1) - SAMUEL SHERBINE hh inhabitants presumed to be:

... 1 m 5 - 9y, b. 1831 - 1835 / Samuel L. ?

★ 1850 Census (June 1) - Stoneycreek Twp, Somerset Co PA;

*tested descendants of, share dna with tested descendants of John Sharbine:

1) Elizabeth Sherbine (1808-1885) Columbiana Co, OH

+++ 5 stayed in Pennsylvania / 2 went to Ohio / 2 went to Illinois / 1 went to Iowa

Further solidifying the circumstantial and dna evidence that John Sharbine was related to the Phillip Sherbine family children in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, is the fact that Phillip's youngest son David Frank Sherbine who moved to McDonough, Illinois, also shares the same name as this John Sharbine's son David Frank Sharbine. Too coincidental to ignore.
