Charles grew up in West Mountain, Upshur County, Texas, where his grandfather, John Knox Morgan was one of the first pioneer settlers in the early 1850's. Theirs was a large family of close-knit God-fearing Christians who loved to sing gospel music. His uncle "Roe" Morgan ran a singing school in Upshur County where the Stamps brothers attended before they formed the Stamps quartet. This family donated the land for the Morgan Cemetery in West Mountain, Texas, where many of this family are buried.
