Mrs Mary Clifford Howell, the oldest Resident of Pennington is celebrating her ninety fifth birthday today at her home,. where she has lived with her family for fifty five years.
Mrs Howell, who is a widow, was born in 1816, and was one of eleven children all of whom have lived to a ripe old age. She is the only living direct descendant of Enoch Armitage, who settle in Pennington in the early part of the eighteenth century. Armitage cut timber from the woods and built and preached the dedicatory sermon for the first Presbyterian Church erected in the borough. The building was afterward destroyed by fire.
She is also a grand daughter of John Clifford, who enlisted in the Revolutionary war under Captain Houghtaling, taking active part in the battles of Monmouth and Valley Forge. Clifford was with General Washington and his army when they crossed the Delaware River just west of this town on their march to Trenton.
Advancing age has enfeebled Mrs Howell and confined her to her room, but she has nevertheless retained all her facilities.
