Chris C. Sherri, noted fair director dies

Chris C. Sherri, 87, longtime Antelope Valley Fair Board president and director, died in Santa Maria Thursday following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Sherri was the founder of Sherri Chefs, a group of about 20 volunteer barbecue cooks who still officiate at numerous Antelope Valley community events.
In the early 1930s, he began the Lancaster Kiwanis Club Sheepherders' Brawl, an annual lamb barbecue that still is a traditional fund-raiser for the group.
Mr. Sherri served on the Antelope Valley Fair Board for 28 years, probably the longest tenure of any fair director in the state. He served as president of the board 10 or 12 times.
He first became a member of the Antelope Valley Fair organization in the late 1930s, then continued to serve after the 50th Agricultural District was formed in 1941 to operate the Fair.
Mr. Sherri came to the Antelope Valley in 1923. In 1928, he began operating a sheep and alfalfa ranch on the Westside near 90th Street West and Avenue G.
He was a charter member of Lancaster BPO Elks Lodge No. 1625. Mr. Sherri was on the Production Credit Association (PCA) board and on the board of the Antelope Valley Haygrowers Association, serving as president for two years.

He was a trustee on the Lancaster Cemetery District board.
Born in Albania in 1900, Mr. Sherri moved in 1920 to Detroit where he worked in his cousin's restaurant, where he soon became manager. One of the waitresses he hired was Azalea Hall, who became his wife on Sept. 8, 1922.
In the early 1970s, he and his wife, who survives, moved from the Antelope Valley to Arroyo Grande. Later, they lived in Grover City, then in Santa Maria with their daughter, Sofia.
Mumaw Funeral Home, Lancaster, is in charge of arrangements.
