Mrs. Katharina M. Menninger
Obituary Death Date 2 Mar 1902
Tell City Anzeiger 8 Mar 1902
Another old pioneer lady departed from our midst. It is again our duty to report on the death of one of the most respected pioneer women. On Sunday evening at 8 o'clock namely Mrs. Katharina M. Menninger nee Schmidberger, died at the high age of 73 years, 3 months and 1 day. Born 1 Dec 1828 in Bonstadt, County of Friedberg, Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt, she emigrated in 1848 with her parents to America and settled with them in Pittsburgh, Pa. The following year the family moved to Cincinnati, Oh. Here in 1850 the deceased married Mr. August Menninger, her now surviving husband, with whom had lived 52 years in happy marriage. In 1860 she came with her family to Tell City and remained residing here until her death. She also had to go through many a troublesome hour, as all pioneers. Still she did not let her sprit sink and saw to the future courageously and full of hope, until it finally became better. She was a active German woman, friendly and obliging towards all, and deed. She was a loving wife and mother, always thinking more of her family than herself, and her death calls forth deep sorrow not only here, but also in other places where she was known. The marriage was blessed with nine children, of which three preceded her in death, while besides her husband, four daughters, the Mmes. J.T. Patrick and R. Karcher, and the Misses Emma and Flora Menninger, of here, as well as two sons, Mr. August Menninger likewise of here and Dr. Karl Menninger, of Topeka, Kansas survive. She also leaves a sister living here, Mrs. Margaretha Ress, as well as twenty two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She always enjoyed the best of health until she began to be sickly a few years ago, always recovering again to the joy of her family. On Sunday a week ago, however she suffered an attack again, from which she should no longer recover, in that she, as reported above, on Sunday evening in spite of the most loving and most devoted care from her family, gave up her spirit. She was a founder of the local Evangelical Ladies Society and a member of the same until her end. Here she accomplished much worthy recognition and her good work will be unforgettable, and the members of the Ladies Society will severely miss her. Her burial took place Wednesday afternoon in the city cemetery, after Pastor Simon had held a requiem service in the house mourning and in the Evangelical church. In spite of the impassable roads an enormous mass of grief bearers from near and far was there to pay the final honor to the departed. The many splendid flowers give evidence of how very much she was appreciated and respected. May the earth be easy on her and may she rest in peace.

Daughter, Elenore married Rudolph Kaercher in Perry Co., IN on 19 Nov 1874. When Elenore died in 1924 at Indianapolis she was buried beside her husband in Crown Hill Cemetery, in Indianapolis. Memorial 45927988
