John was born in Camden and attended Camden Public Schools where he demonstrated extraordinary musical talent as a drummer. While still a Senior at Camden High School, he was appointed staff percussionist with the WCAU studio orchestras of Johnny Warrington and Elliot Lawrence and played on daily coast- to- coast radio broadcasts on the CBS network. He was later featured on WCAU- TV on the 'Take Ten' program hosted by Ed McMahon who started his career in Philadelphia.
While at Camden High, he also played with other budding musicians who later became nationally known jazz artists such as Nelson Boyd (bass), Ziggy Vines (saxophone) and Sam Dockery (piano).
After graduation, he joined the Bob Chester big band and toured for several months but quickly tired of the 'road' and returned to his family in Camden. He then became the house drummer at Chubby's Restaurant in West Collingswood that at the time featured the top nightclub acts in the country such as Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett and others. During the summer of 1958, he played at the Club Bolero in Wildwood, New Jersey where he met his wife to be Marcia Manning whose dance performance was the opening act for Sammy Davis , Jr. and others.
They eventually married and settled in their first home in Mount Laurel, New Jersey where Marcia started the teaching of dance classes. Her efforts were so successful that they eventually built and operated the Marcia Hyland Dance & Arts Center on Church Road in Mt. Laurel. John's business acumen together with Marcia's artistic talents enabled them to provide a wide range of dance instruction from ballet to jazz for thousands of area dancers. Each year, a professionally produced recital is held for multiple performances before packed venues at Cherry Hill East High School and other venues. Although devoted to the business affairs of the Arts Center, John was still in demand as a 'first call' drummer and became the personal percussionist and travelled with Edyie Gorme, the Andrews Sisters, Al Martino, TV star Mike Douglas, and others.
Relatives and friends are invited Friday beginning 9:00AM to
PLATT MEMORIAL CHAPELS, INC. 2001 Berlin Road, Cherry Hill where funeral services conducted by Monsignor Michael Doyle, Church of the Sacred Heart, Camden will begin promptly at 11:00AM. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
