James Burbage
Birth: c. 1531
Death: Feb. 2, 1597

English Renaissance Theatre Figure. Born in London, England, he is noted as the builder of the first permanent dedicated theatre built in England since Roman times. As an actor and theatre owner, he was heavily involved in groups concerning England's theater and bridged the gap between late-medieval drama. In 1576, he decided to create a new, permanent stage for London acting groups. He purchased the Blackfriars property which had once been a Dominican monastery and renovated the building into the world's first permanent, purpose-built indoor theatre. Simply named The Theatre, located in Shoreditch, his playhouse was given exclusive rights to perform in the City of London, by a Privy Council order. After his death his eldest son Cuthbert managed the theatre and his son Richard Burbage, became one of the most celebrated actors of his era. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
