Priest. Bishop. Born in Sliema, he attended St. Ignatius's College of Birkirkara and the Capranica College and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Graduating in theology, he was ordained a Presbyter in Malta. He began missionary work among pagan tribes in the Philippines. From there, he settled in Brooklyn as a parish priest. During the WWI was US chaplain serving in the Panama Canal Zone and Puerto Rico until 1919. After the war, he became Secretary to Cardinal Dougherty, Archbishop of Philadelphia. Pope Benedict XV named him Bishop of the Diocese of Puerto Rico. He was also given a mission to Guatemala. Pope Pius XI assigned him as Apostolic Delegate to the Antilles and México, and in 1927 as Apostolic Internuncio in Haiti. In 1935, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Cuba. During his 29 years of episcopacy, Caruana consecrated five bishops, including Cuba's First Cardinal, Manuel Arteaga y Betancourt.
