U.S. Continental Congressman. Immigrating to the Colonies, he pursued in academic courses and engaged as a planter in Bandon, North Carolina. Entering politics, he was elected to the Continental Congress, serving (1781, 1784 to 1785). He also was a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1781 to 84, 1788 to 1790, 1792). In 1801, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventh Congress, serving until his death.
