Mr. Matzen was born Feb. 14, 1928, in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, the son of Henry and Anna Stoltenberg Matzen. He married Violet Paustian March 9, 1952, in Davenport.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served as MP in Stuttgaart Germany.
He was a member of American Legion Post 548 in Walcott.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed Iowa history and picking up stone and arrowheads on his property.
Survivors include the widow; daughters, Marlene Avitt, Manteo, N.C., Cyndia Mays and Sharon McCubbin, both of Davenport; sons, Virgil Matzen and Arliss Matzen, both of Walcott; five grandchildren; sisters, Irene Krambeck and Jeanette Stoltenberg, both of Davenport; and brothers, Clarence Matzen, DeWitt, and Lester Matzen, Eldridge.
