Aileen Bernetta (Evans) Gilbert, 96, of Altamont, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at the Lutheran Care Center in Altamont. Aileen was born June 20, 1917 in Effingham County, the daughter of Tony W. and Ludie (Keller) Evans. She married Lt. Col. Thomas Gilbert Aug. 22, 1942, in Presque Isle, Maine, while he was stationed in Labrador.
They lived in Japan three years during the occupation, in Arlington, Va., for four years while he was in the Pentagon, and then retired to Ft. Pierce, Fla.
Aileen served as a Grey Lady at veteran's hospitals during World War II and was recognized for a thousand hours of volunteer nursing care. In Ft. Pierce, Florida she belonged to the First United Methodist Church and served in many capacities including UMW president serving many terms. She was an active member in Heathcoate Garden Club. She excelled in flower arranging having studied in Japan, loved china painting, collecting and lecturing on lace, playing bridge and volunteering.
Aileen moved to Altamont in December of 2005 and transferred to Untied Methodist Church. She enjoyed her association with dear friends at the Lutheran Care Center where she made her home the eight years of her life.
Aileen leaves behind her sister, Betty (Evans) Lebo and husband George of Decatur; nieces Claudia (Goers) Berg and husband Roger of Altamont, Debby (Evans) Payne and husband Ron of Simsbury, Conn., Kim Schmidt of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Belinda Ventura of Chicago; nephews, Ron Schroeder of Peoria, Tony Evans III and wife Laurie of East Grandby, Conn., and Jamie Johnson of Santa Anna, Calif.
Aileen was reunited in Heaven with her parents; husband of 62 years; brother, Tony Evans II; sister, Lorene (Evans) Goers; and niece, Pam (Evans) Wendell.
Memorial services to celebrate Aileen's life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lutheran Care Center Chapel, 702 W. Cumberland Road, Altamont.
