Upon arriving in Vietnam, John was assigned to HMM-163, MAG-15, 1st Marine Air Wing. John died of multiple injuries to the body when the helicopter that he was a gunner in was involved in a mid-air collision with another helicopter, 2 kilometers southeast of Cam Lo.
Survived by his mother, Margaret Conlyn Nixon and 2 sisters, Pearson and Helen of Arlington, Virginia.
His father, Robert A Nixon was deceased.
