WWII - Killed in Action
FIRST SPECIAL SERVICE FORCE
2nd Company -1st Regiment

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Loney and Sophia Rounds of Tupper Lake, NY he was born in Chateaugay, NY and has resided in Tupper Lake for the past 21 years.
Patrick attended Tupper Lake high school, he was quite an athlete playing on the varsity basketball, football and track teams. He was also a member of the high school band and a drum major of the local WFW Fife and Drum Corps.

Patrick enlisted for military service in March 1941 and later joined the First Special Service Force in the summer of 1942.
Prior to joining the First Special Service Force Patrick was in the Cavalry for about a year and a half and trained at Fort Riley, Kansas, Calvary Replacement Center and later at Fort Ringold, Texas.

As a member of the First Special Service Force he participated in the Aleutian Campaign, "the bloodless battle of Kiska" and in September he had a short furlough at home, this was the last time he spent with his family. Patrick was then dispatched to Italy, via North Africa, in October 1943 and was wounded within two months, on December 6 1943, by a bullet wound to the head. He had only recently returned to duty when he was killed in action in Italy on February 15th, he was 23 years old.

Surviving besides his parents are four sisters, Marion, Mercedes, Helen and Winifred.

Patrick Rounds remains were repatriated from Europe back to New York and he was reinterred with military honors at Saint Alphonsus Cemetery in August 1948. Veterans of Tupper Lake acted as pall bearers.

In July 2013, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded, collectively, to the First Special Service Force, in recognition of its superior service during World War II.
