CRYSTAL LAKE - Melvin George "Swede" Ackman, 86, of Crystal Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born June 22, 1918, in Riley, to William C. and Matilda (Jurs) Ackman. On April 19, 1942, he married Elsa Imelmann in Huntley.

He lived in McHenry County all his life and in Crystal Lake since 1954. He was the former owner of Crystal Lake Septic.

He was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, and he enjoyed bowling, traveling, and playing cards. He also took great pride in showing his 1924 Fordson tractor and 1930 Model A Ford with his grandson Gene at parades and tractor shows. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, of Crystal Lake, three daughters, Sharon (Earl) Duffy of Crystal Lake, Donna (Ted) Curry of Newburgh, N.Y., and Marilyn Ackman of Norfolk, VA; 10 grandchildren, Pamela (Douglas) Dewey of Monroe, WI, Cheryl (Ted) Spanbauer of Woodstock, Nanci (Will) Parker of Munford, AL, Eugene Duffy of Crystal Lake, Dorothy Parken, Rick (Lisa) Mailler and Roger (Mary) Mailler, all of New York, Shawn Ackman of TN, Kerri Ackman of Munford, and Jason Ackman of Crystal Lake; a granddaughter-in-law, Chris Duffy of Crystal Lake; 10 great-grandchildren, Alex and Daniel Dewey, Peyton and Taylor Spanbauer, Joshua Duffy, Dylan and Harley Duffy, Lauren and Bradley Mailler, and William Mailler; a sister Lucille (Stan) Koch of Marengo; a brother Curtis Ackman of Marengo; a special friend, Brian Banko; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Verda Calhoon; and six brothers, Laverne, Elburn, William, Wilber, Orville and Leonard.

The visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. The burial office will be read at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home. The Rev. William N. Hoelzel III and Pastor Andrea I. Wright will officiate.

Interment will be in McHenry County Memorial Park in Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated to St. Mary Episcopal Church, 210 McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake, IL; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
