Wendell Harold Baker, Sr. was born on November 13, 1922 and departed this life on November 12, 2013. He was the seventh of ten children of Jesse Baker and Fannie Willis Baker, all of whom preceded him in death.

Wendell graduated from Sam Houston High School and went to college at Huston Tillotson College in Austin, TX. He joined the army in 1945 and served as surgical and laboratory technician in the Medical Core. After discharge he attended and graduated with honors from Texas State University for Negroes (TSU) in May of 1949 with a B.A. degree in chemistry and biology.

Wendell married Augusta Jones in 1945. He had six children, Barbara Baker (Revis), Wendell, Jr. (Jerrine), Pamela, Donald -deceased, Bruce (Chanda) and Cima Lawson (John). He had fourteen grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, several great, great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Wendell had extensive work experience including being certified as a teacher, principal and superintendent. He taught chemistry and physics at Sam Houston High School for 12 years. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company after 25 years of service. He was a radio announcer on KSAM. He was a talented musician with a beautiful voice and ability to play several musical instruments

Wendell was very active in his community and influential in the political arena. He was a lifetime member of NAACP, member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at TSU, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He founded the Walker County Voters League and served as president of Walker County Black Teacher's Association and Chairman of the science division of Texas State Association. He was co-founder of Walker County Habitat for Humanity and served as secretary for many years. Wendell also served ten years on the Walker County Hospital District Board.

Wendell enjoyed and worked tirelessly to help others. One of his most remarkable accomplishments was authoring a book titled "If Not Me, Who?" which summarizes his passionate efforts to address racial inequality and injustice in Huntsville and the state of Texas. He was sought after by students and authors for historical information and made contributions to several other books.
