Hall of Fame Professional Football Player, Coach. For ten seasons (1951, 1954 to 1962), he played at the offensive tackle, defensive guard and defensive tackle positions in the National Football League with the New York Yanks and Cleveland Browns. Born Michael Joseph McCormack, Jr., he was raised in Kansas City, Kansas, where he attended De La Salle High School. After playing collegiate football at the University of Kansas, he was selected by the New York Yanks during the 3rd-round of the 1951 NFL Draft. Following one season of play with that franchise, McCormack served with the United States Army during the Korean War. While away, he was picked up by the Dallas/Texans (later Baltimore Colts) and acquired by Cleveland in a trade which involved several player. After returning home, he resumed his career with the Browns and became a significant part of their two NFL Championships (1954 and 1955) under Paul Brown. McCormack provided key blocking for quarterback Otto Graham and established himself as one of the top offensive tackles in the league during his era. Individually, he earned Pro-Bowl honors six-times (1951, 1956, 1957 and 1960 to 1962), as he played in 119 regular season games. After retiring as a player, he began a lengthy career as a coach beginning with a period as an assistant under Hall of Fame coaches Vince Lombardi and George Allen with the Washington Redskins (1965 to 1972). He was hired to serve as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (1973 to 1975) but failed to produce a winning season during his tenure. He went on to serve a stint as offensive lines coach with the Cincinnati Bengals and had two further head coaching experiences with the Baltimore Colts (1980 to 1981) and Seattle Seahawks (1982). Additionally, he served as general manager and president of the Carolina Panthers. He played a vital role as an adviser which paved the way for the franchise's entry into the NFL. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984.
