He deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan in August 2013 and was the compnay's Warrior fighting vehicle Sergeant Major.
WO2 Fisher was killed by vehicle-borne suicide bomb attack while on patrol in the Kamparack area northeast of Patrol Base Lashkar Gah in Helmand province.
Age 42, he was from Barking, east London, and grew up in Elm Park, Hornchurch, Essex. He graduated in 1993 from Staffordshire University with Bachelor of Science honours degree in physics and geology. He joined the Territorial Army in February 1993 with B Company, 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment. WO2 Fisher had completed four previous tours: one to Northern Ireland, two to Iraq and a prior tour of Afghanistan in 2011. His colleagues described him as "the epitome of an Infantry Sergeant Major, straight-talking and obsessive in his pursuit of excellence and gaining the most from his subordinates while ensuring their wellbeing". He enjoyed hill walking, climbing and camping with his family and friends. He loved to travel at every opportunity.
WO2 Fisher leaves behind his wife Emma, their two young sons James and William, his parents Simon and Helen, other family members and many friends. His widow said, "Ian will always be the centre of my life, he will be remembered as a doting father, loving husband and a true professional soldier. He loved being a soldier, that's what he lived for. We are all so proud and always will be."
Funeral with full military honours was held December 3, 2013 at Lichfield Cathedral.
