William Henry Bartels was the son of Heinrich Conrad and Johanna (Ostermeier) Bartels, on their farm in the Plymouth precinct of Jefferson county, Nebraska.
He married Gesina Busch on February 9, 1905 in Plymouth, Nebraska, and they had four children: Walter, Roy, Gloria, and Anna Gesina (who was born and died on July 3, 1913).
He farmed at first, and then moved into Plymouth where he and later his sons with him, were carpenters, in the construction business. He later owned and operated the Bartels Service Station, a Phillips 66 gasoline station, in Plymouth.
At death, he was survived by his 3 children.
