Roy Herman Carl Bartels, the second of four children of William Henry and Gesina (Busch) Bartels, was born on the family farm in Plymouth precinct, Jefferson County, Nebraska. When he was young, the family moved into Plymouth, Nebraska. His father was a carpenter, and his brother Walter and he became carpenters also. Throughout his lifetime he continued this occupation, building and managing apartments in Beatrice.

On October 28, 1938, he married Florence Fix, daughter of Walter Henry and Hattie Louise (Albers) Fix. They lived in Plymouth, and then in Beatrice. Their children are Larry, Rodney, and Peggy.

Roy was a veteran of World War II.

Roy died at the Tabitha Hospice Center at the age of 94. Surviving him were his wife, children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant sister Anna Gesina who was born and died on July 3, 1913; his brother Walter & Walter's wife Rose; and his sister Gloria (Mrs. Wilson Haverfield).
