Charles served as a Staff Sergeant & Waist Gunner on B-17 #42-29491, 509th Bomber Squadron, 351st Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Cumberland County, Maine prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on May 11, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

B-17 #42-29491 took off from Polebrook, England on a practice flight. They collided in mid-air with B-17 #42-29865 and both crashed near Polebrook. The entire crew of " both " B-17's were lost in this crash.

Charles died in the "Line Of Duty" in this plane crash during the war.

Brother of Carl Chadbourne, Frederick Chadbourne, Donald Chadbourne, Howard Chadbourne, & Robert Chadbourne.

His brother, Pfc Donald E. Chadbourne, was also "Killed In Action" during the war.

1LT Rupert L. Torrey of Oxford County, Maine was also killed on this same flight.
