Donald L. "Duke" Abbott, 81 of Albany, IL, died Thursday, October 31, 2013 at his home.

Duke was born January 13, 1932, to LaCleive and Gertrude (Housenga) Abbott, on a Whiteside County, IL, farm. He attended Clinton, IA schools and graduated in 1949. He married Lois Ann Rigby on December 22, 1951, in Camp LeJeune, NC. She died on August 24, 2009.

Duke served in the United States Navy for 4 years, during the Korean War. He worked at E.I. DuPont in Clinton, IA for 37 years. In addition to DuPont, he owned and operated a dry wall business.

He was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton, IA, and a current member of Albany United Methodist Church. He served in many capacities at both churches. Duke enjoyed his vacations in Estes Park, Co. He enjoyed hunting behind his Brittany Spaniels, fishing on the Mississippi River, and working crossword puzzles. Our dad loved his grandchildren and was a caregiver at heart. He provided a home to anyone in need, whether it was to a stranded Japanese businessman or a family member that needed a place to stay. Duke cared for his wife, Lois, at home during her decade long battle with dementia.

Survivors include two daughters, Mindy (Rex) Stratton of Clinton, IA and Rebecca (Ron) Wells of Overland Park, KS; two sons, Michael (Claudia) Abbott of Clinton, IA and Timothy (Tracey) Abbott of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren, Hannah (Kai) Nurrieum, Joshua , Kaitlin, Abbie, Olivia, and Emma Wells, Alexandria and Theren Abbott; two great grandchildren, MacKail Ooton and Joshua Nurrieum; one brother, Neal (Anita) Abbott of Clinton, IA; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Abbott of Camanche, IA, many nieces and nephews; special friends, Margaret Naftzger, Doris and Delores Rus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois; one sister, two brothers.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM Monday, November 4, 2013 at the Albany United Methodist Church, Albany, IL. Reverend William Owen, Retired Pastor of United Methodist Church will be officating. Visitation will be 4:00 – 8:00 PM Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Private Family Interment will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton, IA
