Son of Benjamin H Adams and Malvina M Cushman. Transcripts of various Vermont vital statistics records list his mother as Melissa, Malonia, or Maloid.
Some records list Benjamin's place of birth as Waitsfield, Vermont. His obituary (Burlington Free Press, November 11, 1909) states he was born in Tunbridge, Vermont.
Benjamin appears in some records as "B. Henry Adams".
On August 22, 1862, Benjamin enlisted to serve with the Union Army during the Civil War. On October 4, he mustered in as a Private in Company D of the 12th Vermont Infantry. He mustered out July 14, 1863. After re-enlisting, he mustered in again on August 8, 1864 with the 2nd Vermont Light Artillery Battery. Benjamin transferred to the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery Company on March 1, 1865, and continued to serve until July 28, 1865.
On April 28, 1868, Benjamin married Eunice A Scribner in Williamstown, Vermont. (Benjamin's obituary states they were married in South Washington, Vermont, and that they lived there until 1887.
