U.S. Congressman. He took an academic course in Jefferson College, then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1861 and commenced to practice law in Wooster, Ohio. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain of Company H, 16th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he was recorder of Wayne County, Ohio in 1867 and was postmaster of Wooster, (1867-72, 76). In 1881, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress, served until 1883 and elected to the Fifty-fourth Congress, serving (1881-83). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death until his death.
