Funeral services were held for Newell R. Calhoun, 91, from the funeral home chapel in Chester on Monday, March 25th at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Chapman conducted services and the body was taken to Odell for burial.

OBITUARY --

Newell R. Calhoun was born September 11, 1854 in Gilford county (sic), Turnersville, North Carolina, and departed this life on March 23, 1946, at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 12 days.

He was the eldest of eleven children born to Jessie and Pheobia Calhoun. At an early age he moved with his parents to Illinois where he grew to manhood, and on November 14, 1878, he was united in marriage to Huldah Leona McCormick. To this union three sons and three daughters were born.

Leaving Illinois in 1884, they came farther west and in year 1913, located in Odell where they resided until Mrs. Calhoun passed away on June 20, 1936. Shortly following his wife's death he moved to Chester and has since resided with his son, Jessie. While living in Odell he united with the Methodist church (sic) at that place.

He leaves to mourn his passing three sons, Jessie of Chester, Shirley of Whiting, Kansas, Ray of Hubbell, Nebraska; two daughters, Elsie Craig of Oberlin, Kansas and Iva Murray of Columbus Junction, Iowa; 10 grand-children; 18 great-grand-children; 3 brothers and 2 sisters....contributed by Find A Grave contributor Peggy Bargen Duey, 10/16/2012.
