Malcolm was the fourth child of Edwin McIntosh and Annie "Nan" Hulme. He had the misfortune to be born into a broken home that further disintegrated around him as a youth. Although he finished school, he was not at home in this world and told of hearing Jesus suggesting he go out to a forest to live. His recital of these suggestions fell on hardened hearts. I had been led by my father to be an atheist and my ex-wife, who was a psychologist and should have known better, also rejected him. After several years of attempted treatment as a psychiatric patient, he took his own life. In my eulogy for him, I stated our challenge now is to find meaning for us in his life.

Obituary published in Herald Sun on Sep. 9, 1998: McINTOSH. - Malcolm Andrew. Apr. 3, 1969 - Sept. 7, 1998. Passed away suddenly. Much loved son of Edwin and Nan. Brother to Robert, Alexander and Alastair, brother-in-law to Francine. Uncle to Jai, Flynn, Brech and Liam. A gentle spirit in God's care and in our hearts forever.

Malcolm was dearly loved by his paternal grandmother Sylvia (Johnston) McIntosh.
