Graduated Mount Auburn High School in May 1941, attended summer school at Ames taking metal and lathe work. Served in the US Navy during World War II. Was an airplane mechanic during the war. Contracted malaria in the Fiji Islands that bothered him for several years. Resided in Seattle, WA after the war where he worked as a carpenter, metal worker and airplane mechanic for the Boeing Airplane Co. Married twice and had 3 sons by first wife, Ruth Erickson, and four grandchildren. World War II: Enlisted in the US Navy 26 Dec 1941 together and at same time as his father, Harold A Smalley.
Siblings: Ruth (married name McAndrews died 1980), Lee, Doris (married name Pippert), Jim, Norman, John and Gene.
