Grandson of Ezekiel and Elizabeth Betsy (Brooner) Van Winkle & Robert and Anna (Banks) Collins. Great-Grandson of Simeon and Brelinda (Hinton) Van Winkle & Hiram and Millie (Taylor) Brooner.

He was a farm laborer and also had been a sawyer at a sawmill in the 1940's. He had also worked as a truck driver.
