Enlisted as Principle Musician in Band of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years. Mustered into Federal service the same day. Mustered out of service on August 10, 1862, at Harrison's Landing, Virginia.

John appears in the 1870 OR Benton Co. census dated 15 July, having left his wife Sarah and son Joseph Francis "Franklin" with their dau Sarah Electra and her husband Barney Isaac Carey in Monroe Co., Summerfield Twp. By 1880 his wife and son have come to OR Linn Co. In 1870 he gives his occupation as a Farmer & Physician, in 1880 as a Physician.

Married Sarah Logan on January 2, 1834 in Wood County, Ohio.

Margaret, James, Major Logan, Johnson, Sarah Electa, Martha, Wilson Taylor, Mary, Emma, Harriet Elizabeth, Joseph Francis "Franklin"
