Absalom B. Crubaugh was born in 1852 to David Crubaugh and Margaret Mary Elizabeth Benner. He was the 6th of their 12 children. He married Jane Eugenia "Jennie" Parsons on 25 May 1876 in Columbiana County, OH. They had three children together - Etta Luella Crubaugh (1878-1961), Harmon Crubaugh (1884-1884), and Howard Crubaugh (1895-1896). Etta never married.

There is an extensive section in the book, "Crubaugh - the American Story" by William Leon Crubaugh that discusses the life and experiences of Absalom Crubaugh. William lists his name as Absolem B. Crubaugh, but I've selected the spelling used in almost every census listing. Included in that section of the book is an detailed accounting of the capture and surrender of the famous Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders. The event occurred on the Crubaugh Farm, on a Sunday morning in July of 1863. Absalom's account of the event was captured by a local historian, Will Thompson, who published his report "The Last Days and Nights of Morgan's Raid". Absolem's father, David Crubaugh, was the owner of the farm which has the honor of being the farthest point north ever reached by armed Confederates, during the War of the Rebellion. It was on his farm that the Union cavalry formed in line of battle across the road within sight of the West Beaver Church. A large granite monument now marks the spot where negotiations for the surrender where made. It is called "Morgan's Monument".

Absolem and Jennie were parents of three children. Etta Luella was born on November 18. 1878. at Mount Union. Harmon was born on February 6. 1884. on the farm at West Point, Ohio. Howard was born on October 2. 1895. at Wellsville. Ohio.

Sometime prior to 1890, Absolem relocated to Wellsville. Ohio, where he opened a shoe and boot making shop, a business he operated until he retired. During the year of 1890, he was the president of City Council in Wellsville. In 1898 their son, Howard died, at the age of 3 years, from whooping cough. (my note: the LDS file - Ohio Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997, gives Howard's death date as 17 Jan 1896).

Absolem died at the age of 77 at his home in Wellsville, Ohio, on Nov. 25, 1930. He was buried in the Springhill Cemetery (Lot 23, grave 1), at Wellsville. Eugenie's (Jennie) death occurred on June 21, 1932. She was buried beside Absolem in grave 2.
