William Eldgin "Sam" Bass
Eldgin Bass, of California City, was born in Conway, Arkansas on June 24, 1924. He passed away on September 19, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mattie Jo Bass. His four children, Judy Smith, Dr. Larry Bass, Trudy Hopper and Althea McGuire, three of which reside in California City. Grandchildren include Ligier Rorabaugh, Laura Franks, Tanika Kracke, Keith Howard and Christina McGuire. Great Grandchildren are Cameron Mills, Cassondra Rorabaugh, Tannor Franks, Samantha Kracke, Brent Howard, Kiersten Howard and Tyler Kracke and Great-Great Grandson Brandon Mills. All grand- through great-great grandchildren reside in California City. Sam was the eldest of 9 children and is survived by Howard McClatchey of Rialto, Charles McClatchey of Manteca, Wanda Handsom of Modesto, Nellie Rodden of Boron, Barry Everett Webb of Boron and Tibby Splawn of Modesto. He was preceded in death by brothers Donald Webb of Mojave and Vernon Beers of Las Vegas, both of which passed earlier this year.

Eldgin, who was called 'Sam' by friends and family, worked at Operating Engineers for 32 years and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He moved to California City in 2001 to be near his family that he dearly loved. Sam, who had a formal second grade education, had a master's degree when it came to living life. He helped to build I-5, I-15, I-40, I-10 and the Cachuma Dam just to name a few.

Those by which he is survived will never forget the many stories that he told and will always remember his humor and love of life. Sam will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 am with funeral services at 11:00 am to be held at Community Church of California City on Friday Sept 23, 2005 with burial to follow at California City Memorial Park, California City, CA

Arrangements are under the direction of Holland & Lyons Mortuary, Ridgecrest CA
