__________
ABOUT Jonas Rice Jr.:

__________
RICE lineage: Jonas-4 Rice Jr., Jonas-3 Rice Sr., Thomas-2 Rice, Edmund-1 Rice who came to Sudbury, Massachusetts, from Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England in 1638.
__________
ABOUT his father, Jonas Rice Sr.:

"JONAS RICE m. Mary Stone* of Sud., Feb. 10, 1701, 2. She was sister of the wife of his brother James, and b. Aug. 10, 1677.
When J. Rice removed from Sud. for the first time to Wor. is not known; he was living at W. in the time of its second settlement, which was broken up and abandoned soon after the commencement of Queen Anne's war, so called, which began in 1702. As the births of all his chil., except the youngest, are on Sud. records, it is probable he returned there when driven from Worcester. He may have resided for a time at Marlboro, but there is no evidence of it on the records of that town.
He returned to Wor., Oct. 21, 1713, where he remained with his family alone in the forest and in solitude until the spring of 1715, when his brother Gershom moved in with his family. Upon the return of Jonas Rice, in 1713, commenced the permanent settlement of Worcester; hence he has been called the "first settler" of that town. He was truly "the father of the town," a title disputed by none, but bestowed by all. He officiated in many of the town offices, and in some of them to the close of life. He was appointed, in 1753, one of the justices of the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Worcester, in which office he d. on the 22d of Sept. in that year, aged 80 years 6 mo. and 14 days not 84 years, as said in the Boston Gazette. That appointment, and his entrance upon the duties of that office at the age of 80 years, are unquestionable evidence that he then retained his mental and bodily faculties in a remarkable degree. He then exceeded, by ten years, the age at which judges in many of the States are required by law to retire from the bench by reason of presumed incapacity, arising from the infirmities of age. His gravestone at Worcester says he " d. Sept. 20th, (town record says Sept. 22d) 1753, aged 81. He was the first settler in Worcester, and one of the judges of the Inferior Court for Worcester County."
