World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in London, England, he served as a Private in the 1st Battalion, London Scottish Regiment, British Army. On January 24, 1944, the day after the Allied landings at Anzio, Italy, it was essential for the British units to gain a firm foothold on the hills to the rear of the town and beachhead. When many of the units officers and staff non commission officers had been wounded or killed, Private Mitchell charged alone up a hill through intense fire, to assault a machinegun post. He jumped into the weapon pit and killed the crew. The advance then continued, but shortly afterwards was again held up and again Private Mitchell assault on the position resulted in six of the enemy killed and 12 taken prisoner. He led two more successful attacks before falling dead, shot by one of the enemy who had surrendered. For his heroic action in Northern Italy, he was posthumously vested the Victoria Cross and his award was given to his family by King George VI at Buckingham Palace on July 14, 1945.
