Helen Pauley Tipton of Brawley passed away July 17 at Pioneers Memorial Hospital of natural causes. She was 83.
Mrs. Tipton was born in McCurtain Co., Oklahoma to Joseph and Etta Mays Pauley on November 30, 1921. She married Andrew I. Reed on July 12, 1940 in Oklahoma and came to California as a new bride.
Having graduated from high school in Oklahoma, Mrs. Tipton finished her education in the Imperial Valley where she resided for 65 years. At age 25, she started working in Brawley and was associated with Western Auto, J.C. Penny Company, and Firestone Stores where she won honors certificates for salesmanship from the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. Later, Mrs. Tipton was manager of Town Shops in downtown El Centro.
From 1965 to 1975, as Home Service Representative for the Imperial Irrigation District, she worked throughout the Valley, and from 1976 to 1982, she worked in the business office at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley.
On September 11, 1982, she married Eugene Tipton who preceded her in death on February 22, 1984.
She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Charles A. Reed; parents Joseph and Etta Pauley; brothers Wayne and Kenneth Pauley; son-in-law Clifford M. Brown; and grandson John A. Brown.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, July 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Frye Chapel in Brawley. Graveside services will be Saturday, July 23, at 9 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Margaret A. Brown of Brawley; daughter and son-in-law Jeanie C. and Vern Lentz; sister Jolene Thomas of Fresno; grandchildren C. Mark Brown, Paul M. Brown, Tony V. Lentz, Matthew J. Brown, Michael B. Lentz all of Brawley and M. Elizabeth Brown of Lake Balboa, Calif.; great-grandchildren Benjamin J. Brown, Lauren A. Brown, Cody L. Daffern, J. Tyler Brown, Erin G. Brown, Zachary Wise, Joseph Wood, and Katie B. Lentz all of Brawley, and Tanner Cole Racin Lentz of Calipatria; sister-in-law Myrtle Carpenter of Redding, Calif., former husband Andrew I. Reed of Elk Grove, Calif. and many nieces and nephews.
