Mary Catherine (Cornish) Estoppey, 85 of Winthrop Street, Tariffville, beloved wife of 61 years of Royden Fitch Estoppey died after a long illness on Wednesday, (September 19, 2001) at Meadowbrook of Granby.

Mary was born July 15, 1916 in Paterson, NJ daughter of the late Hubert and Clara (Alward) Cornish. She was a graduate of NJC (now Douglass), married Roy, and they moved to Berkeley Heights, NJ, where they raised their three daughters, Carol Alice Estoppey of New York City, Nancy Doris Estoppey of Queens, NY, and Joan Dorothy (Estoppey) Nagy of Tariffville.

Mary worked as a teacher and a librarian and volunteered on the Rescue Squad before returning to school at the age of 50 to pursue a career in nursing, and she worked for several years as a nurse at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ.

In 1971 Mary and Roy moved to Sierra Madre, CA. where she was able to take up a new passion in life, gardening. Her backyard gardens were famous, and she shared her skills with the town by beautifying many public areas and volunteering for the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association and Huntington Gardens.

Mary was also an accomplished baker, cook, and seamstress. Her family and friends still talk about her pies and apple crisp, and we still remember the first clothes she made for her daughters out of cotton feed sacks procured during World War II.

Although a quiet and unassuming person, Mary had another persona. She and Roy loved to ride their three wheeled ATVs in the Mojave Desert, where they collected rocks near their desert cabin. The neighbors called her the "Johnson Valley Meter Maid".

Mary and Roy traveled back and forth across the U.S. in their camper many times after retirement. They also enjoyed ballroom dancing in their spare time, Even as Mary's body failed her, everyone who met her could see her indomitable spirit, her kind and gentle nature, and her devotion to her family, She is loved and cherished.

She will be sorely missed by her husband, her daughters, her son-in-law, John Nagy; her four grandchildren, Daniel, Anni, Khiem, and Rosie Nagy of Tariffville; her sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Dr. Theodore Reyhner of Chico, CA; and all her extended family and friends, She was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy.

Friends may call at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury. Sunday. September 23, 2-4 p.m. Memorial service will be Monday, September 24, 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Church Street, Tariffville, followed by burial in Simsbury Cemetery.
